R.E.M. came to town in September. My girlfriend Cindy and I went to the show. I didn’t know exactly how to describe their music at that time, but I liked them. We had gotten backstage after the show and then dragged a couple of the band members into my pickup truck and went over the river into Iowa to a bar.
We all got completely wasted. Upon leaving, one band mate hit guitarist Peter Buck in the nose. He was really upset.
As we were driving back to the hotel, I had to stop by my house for weed. Peter commented on my driving and grabbed the wheel and steered us into one of those orange road cones.
When we got back to the hotel, I went up to Peter’s room with him, and we were kissing and caressing each other. It is always terrible timing to have to tell someone to be careful, right in the middle of taking each other’s clothes off, but I had gone off the pill.
He told me not to be worried about it, and when I told him I was, he replied, “Do you think I want any kids right now?”
I thought well okay. He had a huge cock and fucked the shit out of me that night. I can remember being really nervous up until my period finally came. Thank God.
I had gone to Planned Parenthood for birth control pills and had been on them for about a year. But I was gaining weight, so I went off.
Until I tried other birth control methods, I would warn the guys who would pull out or I would finish them off with my mouth. Then along came the Today sponge. It was the greatest thing in the whole world.
If I knew I was going to get it on with whoever I was with—and anticipating that I wouldn’t kill the moment later—I would go into the bathroom early in the evening, tear open the package and get the little foamy white cylinder wet and then squeeze to get it sudsy and pop it in. There wasn’t a string like a tampon but a loop, and I’d just insert a finger to snag the loop and pull out the sponge.
I never got a sexually transmitted disease except a case of crabs from a local guy. Then, nobody realized the dangers of HIV/AIDS. Maybe some of these guys were closet gays or bisexual, but we didn’t know then.
I was still living the dream that Billy Squier was going to notice me, and it would be me in love forever. Maybe he didn’t even know or remember me, but I was obsessed and willing to take a trip to Phoenix on October 9 for another shot at it.
I was always nervous and just petrified around him. I could never bring myself to approach him. I just stood there backstage and hoped he would notice me. He was not a mingler in the hospitality area—usually a point A to point B kinda guy. Who knows? Maybe he was avoiding me.
